In
1968, a group of Black Firefighters
from New York city and other east
coast Departments that knew each
other, felt the need to get as many
Blacks in the fire service from
around the country together to
address the issues of recruitment,
retention, fire related deaths in
Black communities and promotional
opportunities.
In 1970 after two years of
searching, letter writing and phone
calls, the first convention of the
IABPFF was born. Delegates from
across the country came together in
Hartford Conn for the first ever
IABPFF convention. David Floyd, the
first Black man to be assigned to
the FDNY's coveted Rescue company,
Rescue 1, was elected as the first
President.
The IABPFF meets every even year for
their convention. The convention is
held for 5 days in a host city in
the United States. The average
attendance is 300 men and women from
all ranks and all Departments across
the country. Families are welcome to
travel together. There are usually
spouse and children activities.
Recently, the firefighters from the
United Kingdom, the Caribbean and
Africa have joined us.
Detroit will be a great place to
visit and a great way to get to know
other members from across the
country. During the convention,
there will be educational workshops,
a memorial march in full dress
uniform, night life activities and
much more. Please share the
experience and join us.
