*Salary and medical premium subsidy percent effective July 5, 2008. Salary information includes the monthly Paramedic Pay.

 Salary and Benefits:

Trainee salary range $2,603-$3,322* approx. per month.

Medical Premium Subsidy equal to approximately 95%* of the lowest cost high option health insurance premium.

Paid Vacation, Holiday and Sick Leave.

Uniform allowance of $450.00 per year plus an additional one time $125.00 (first year only) for Class A Uniform after successful completion of probation. 

Dependant Care Assistance Program & Deferred Compensation Plans Available. 

Accrued Vacation and Holiday Leave Cash Out Program.

Bilingual pay of $23.08 per pay period if applicable. 

Retirement Program 3% at 50 (Non-PERS).

The County does not participate in the Social Security program, except for the mandatory 1.4% Medicare contribution.

 Minimum Qualifications:

Age: Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and have graduated from high school or equivalent at time of appointment.

 Experience/Education: 

Must have six (6) months experience as a full-time, fully licensed and practicing Paramedic.

Must possess and maintain a National Registry Paramedic License -or- California State Paramedic License. Individuals certified in San Bernardino County (ICEMA) prior to employment will be given placement priority.

Must possess and maintain a valid class "C" Driver's License (or higher).

DMV Printout-Driving Record to include ticket and accident history (printed within the last six months)

CPAT test or timed Biddle test (test must have been taken within the last twelve months). San Bernardino County Consolidated Fire District Paid Call and Limited Term Firefighter applicants must submit a current CPAT test or timed Biddle test to be eligible.

Must have and maintain a current CPR and ACLS Certification. 

Probationary Period: After appointment to Firefighter/Paramedic position, a one-year probationary period is required. Prior to completion of this probationary period, the following must be obtained:

Must successfully complete Firefighter I and Firefighter II Certification through California State Fire Service Training and Education System.

Must successfully complete all phases of probationary testing. 

Must have and maintain throughout employment State of California Paramedic License and ICEMA Accreditation.

Obtain and maintain a Class “B” Firefighter restricted California Driver’s License. 

Obtain and maintain current Paramedic certification in San Bernardino County (ICEMA) prior to successful completion of the San Bernardino County Fire Academy if not certified at time of employment.  

Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform during high stress situations. Must be able to hear in the normal audio range, without correction. Must possess the strength and stamina sufficient to lift and carry equipment and individuals, and be able to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus. Vision must be correctable to 20/20. May be required to pass a color perception test. Must be able to work in a variety of environmental conditions.  

Other Requirements: Applicants will be fingerprinted and must pass a thorough background investigation which may include but is not limited to the following: fingerprinting for a Department of Justice criminal background check, DMV driving record check, military record check, reference checks, and review of prior employment history check. An applicant may be automatically disqualified for misrepresentation, falsification, or omission of pertinent facts in the screening/selection/background check process. Job offers are made contingent upon passing a medical examination and meeting the medical requirements of NFPA 1582 (Standard Medical Requirements for Firefighter). Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug test. Failure to meet medical standards may result in the withdrawal of employment offer. San Bernardino County Service Area 70 has a non-smoking policy. All new employees must adhere to the provisions of the County Fire and Special Districts Dress Code, which prohibits all visible tattoos.

The Selection Process: Applicants meeting or exceeding the minimum requirements will be invited to participate in the departments written testing (which may be comprised of any or all of three components: Human Relations, Mechanical Ability and Reading) in the months immediately following the close date. A select number of applicants with top scores will then be invited to participate in a structured oral interview and paramedic assessment. Passing applicants will then start the background check process and if successful, will move on to a NFPA 1582 Physical. The San Bernardino County Fire Department Academy will follow. PLEASE NOTE:  Applications must contain copies of all certifications prior to application deadline. Resumes are encouraged but will not be accepted in lieu of a County Fire/Special Districts Employment Application. Facsimiles will not be accepted. Any applications received missing copies of documents listed under minimum requirements, the DMV Abstract or a CPAT/Biddle WILL NOT be invited to participate in the written testing.

Under direction and supervision of Fire Marshal, the Civilian Fire Inspector will be responsible for a wide variety of technical work in the inspection, analysis and application of fire protection and prevention practices and principles.
 Major Duties:
•Performs fire inspections of all occupancy group classifications, and enforces laws and ordinances pertaining to fire safety and prevention.
•Performs general and specialized inspections, fire and life safety plan review inspections, sprinkler and fire alarm inspections and haz-mat permit inspections.
•May conduct fire cause determinations at fire scenes to establish origin and cause circumstances of fires, secures and preserves evidence, testifies in court, if needed.
•Conducts building plan reviews and assists with final building inspections, consults with building contractors as required.
•Performs fire safety permit inspections for issuance of special permits.
• Inspects public displays or gatherings.
•nspects installation and removal of underground and above-ground fuel facilities and the storage and handling of flammable, combustible, toxic corrosive, and other hazardous materials.
• Investigates citizen complaints and follow-up on fire company inspections to initiate enforcement activities.
• Reviews findings of inspections with owner/occupants and explains requirements for meeting compliance with codes and regulations; conducts follow-up inspections for violation abatements, as assigned, may act as liaison between the fire prevention bureau and the City prosecutor; maintains records of findings, prepares reports and
complaints, and files with City prosecutor.
• Assist fire suppression personnel in inspection functions and problem inspections; provide follow-up inspections to suppression personnel.
• Responsible for a variety of Fire Prevention programs such as: fire sprinkler retrofit; brush abatement; haz-mat; lock boxes; iron bars, fire drills; Regulation 4 testing; Christmas tree inspections; and FPB requirements.
• Educates public on fire safety issues, speaks to large groups, and presents fire prevention program information at fairs, schools and other special events.
•Performs related duties as required.
 Required Qualifications:
•Three years experience in inspection, completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by an Associates of Arts Degree in Fire Science. Before an appointment is made, the recommended candidate must show proof that they meet the minimum education requirement in the form of a college diploma, transcript, letter from your college/university or other documents approved by Human Resources.

•Uniform Fire Code certification as a Fire Inspector through the International Conference of Building Officials within twelve months of appointment.
 Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of:
•local, state, and federal statutes, codes, rules and regulations related to fire prevention and structural safety, including Uniform Fire Code and Uniform Building Code.
•basic building construction principles.
• fire prevention systems (alarm and extinguishing) and detection systems design and testing.
•blue print reading, and computer skills.
•principles of flammable, explosive, and toxic hazardous materials storage and use.
•principles of electricity.
•fire cause, determination principles and practices of investigative and interviewing techniques.
•physical aspects of fire behavior.

Ability to:
•interpret fire code, building code, laws and ordinances and determine appropriate enforcement action.
•communicate effectively to citizens, supervisors, and staff.
•perform fire cause determination, assist with or conduct fire investigations.
•establish and maintain effective working relationship with the public, departmental personnel, and other public agencies.
•express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, to groups and individuals.
•interpret building plans and read blueprints.
•maintain proper records and reports of all activities.
•conduct thorough inspections and apply fire codes consistently, fairly and accurately.
•recognize potential or existing fire hazards and make appropriate recommendations for abatement.
